Helsinki is one of Europe's fastest growing metropolises. The City of Helsinki has received a good deal of publicity in recent years. In several surveys Helsinki has been voted one of Europe's most important cities for business. Helsinki has also ranked one of the most competitive city in the world and among the best in terms of the quality of life.
According to latest survey Helsinki is considered the most modern and trendy city of the Baltic Sea Region (Wonderful Copenhagen: Experience Design Survey 2008). Helsinki also possesses a strong image as a congress destination. According to statistics compiled by the UIA (Union of International Associations), Helsinki ranks 6th among the world's international congress cities (2006).
Helsinki has a dynamic business life. Every seventh Finnish company is based in Helsinki. In all service sectors, Helsinki-based enterprises account for at least quarter of the entire country's turnover, and the contribution of Helsinki to the educational and training field amounts to almost a half.
Strong areas of expertise in Helsinki include the information sector, electronics, bioengineering and the shipbuilding industry. The city's various administrative departments themselves also constitute centres of expertise. The City of Helsinki employs over 38,000 people, all of whom make their own contribution towards its advancement and progress.
Within the framework of the visitor's programme set up by the city, the expertise of the different departments is now available to other professionals and specialists. Visitors can gain familiarity with health care and the care of the elderly, youth work, or the day care system.
